Here’s a meal to prepare when the family is coming over for a quick visit. Yesterday was so crazy busy I threw this meal together in minutes! Its savory, its quick and it’s a dish the whole family will enjoy!
Low Calorie Sev Puri
Sev Puri is famously known as South Asian street food. You can really make this dish with any ingredients you like. But its typically made with Papri (flat fried puri), potatoes, chickpeas, onions, chutneys, and topped with sev. It's usually served as an appetizer or snack but I feel it can be hearty enough for a meal. Sev is a popular South Asian snack food consisting of small pieces of crunchy noodles made from chickpea flour paste, which are seasoned with turmeric and cayenne before being deep-fried in oil. Here's a great tip: always have a tamarind chutney and a cilantro chutney on hand. It makes so many dishes quick and easy.
Ingredients
- 1 can of cooked chickpeas
- 1 tomato - chopped
- 1/2 small red onion - chopped
- 3 small Yukon Gold Potatoes - boiled and chopped
- 1/4 cup of chopped cilantro
- 3 tbsps of a tamarind chutney
- 3 tbsps of a green chutney (Yasmin's Green Chutney on my blog)
- 1/2 cup of yogurt mixture - recipe below
- 1/2 jalapeno - chopped and seeded (optional)
- 1 cup of thin sev mix
- salt to taste
- 2 tbsps of cholay or regular chaat masala
- Chaat Yogurt Mix
- 1/2 cup of nonfat greek yogurt (you can also use full fat)
- 4 tbsp of water
- 2 tsps of sugar
- 1 tsp of chaat masala mix
- 1 tsp of ground cumin
- 1 tsp of salt
Instructions
Start by prepping all of your ingredients ahead of time, including boiling and cutting up the potatoes.
Have the yogurt mixed and ready to go as well.
You can make this dish in individual bowls or make one big bowl and share it with the family.
In a large bowl, start by adding your washed chickpeas, top it with potatoes, onions, tomatoes and cilantro.
Then add in your yogurt, chutneys and seasonings and stir well.
Top with sev and enjoy right away. If you wish to serve this dish at a later time, I would mix the yogurt, chutneys and sev right before serving for optimal freshness.
